Paris Syndrome

This October News about the "Paris Syndrome" is actually a very common situation in our everyday life or for every travelers. And it just affect more seriously for the Japanese tourists in Paris cause they maybe dream more than others? The syndrome is actually known as Stendhal syndrome or Traveler's syndrome. It could happen when you expecting or hoping too much and get over exciting or depressing in anything in daily life path.

For example. We all experienced heard good critic of a popular movie and ended up disappointed when watching it. Or we could go to London expecting grey and rain but luckily the weather wasn't too bad or even sunny. Lots of people had bad experience with French, but by my many years experience living in Paris, I've only see the improvement but disappointment. I arrived in Paris in 1989 as foreign student. I have had many bad memories during my first 3 years struggling with culture difference, language barrier and animal like immigration treatment. But ever since I can argue back in fluent, intellectual French and understand their mentality; ever since the immigration department separated the visa apply for the illegal immigrants and foreign students, my life in France can finally fill with interests than just fear. And since I knew the hustle and noise in New York City before I moved here, I don't specially dislike the place.

I know some Japanese live in Paris, and never seen them suffered more than I did, since Japanese culture is pretty popular there and Japan is way more powerful country than Taiwan. But I've seen some Japanese students got over nervous and almost had heart attack in the visa bureau. I recalled when I was studying French in Alliance Francaise, many Japanese female students in my class were only there for couple weeks of classes and couple weeks of travel and shopping. They love to learn and they also study hard enough. Once a female teacher was asking someone to read a paragraph in a book, they were almost the only ones raised hands for it. And when a Japanese girl finally finish reading it with a heavy accent and cold sweat. The teacher said: "It was very good. But can you read it again in French?". It was very mean and the rest of the class laughed tear off and none of Japanese students understood what teacher just mocked them.

It's true. Our childhood is full of fairy tales if you're lucky enough and later became realistic if you're not that lucky. We all learned from the old French travel ads and songs, how Paris is romantic and beautiful. How French are perfect lover or so and so. But we also know how rude the attitude you might get. Just like you heard about to kiss a frog might bring you a prince but you don't actually believe it and kiss every frog you can reach. And also you can't learn a language without knowing the mentality, and you can't appreciate the others without knowing them. That we can get Stendhal syndrome anywhere about anything if we expect too much. But to generalise French or Parisian too rude and gave them a name of syndrome maybe is a bit overwhelming. Since we know there is lot more psychology treatments in NYC than anywhere else.

How Many Countries In The World?

此篇轉載自infoplease.com

There are 194 countries in the world today.

Unless you don't count Taiwan…

Taiwan is not considered an official country by many, which would bring the count down to 193 countries. Although Taiwan operates as an independent country, many countries (including the U.S.) do not officially recognize it as one. Because the People's Republic of China considers Taiwan a breakaway province of China, countries who wish to maintain diplomatic relations with China have had to sever their formal relations with Taiwan (more than 100 countries, however, have unofficial relations with Taiwan).

How many countries belong to the United Nations?

192 countries are UN members. The exceptions are Taiwan (in 1971, the UN ousted Taiwan and replaced it with the People's Republic of China) and Vatican City. The newest UN members are Switzerland (2002) and Montenegro (2006).

What are the world's newest countries?

The world's newest country is Montenegro, which became a country in June 2006, after splitting off from Serbia. Before that, the newest country was East Timor, which became a nation in 2002 after gaining independence from Indonesia. Since 1990, 27 new nations have come into being. Many of these emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union (14 countries) and the breakup of the former Yugoslavia (6 countries). See our Guide to New Nations.

Are there still any countries that have colonies?

There are 61 colonies or territories in the world. Eight countries maintain them: Australia (6), Denmark (2), Netherlands (2), France (16), New Zealand (3), Norway (3), the United Kingdom (15), and the United States (14). See Territories, Colonies, and Dependencies for a list of the world's colonies and what countries administrate them, p. 663.

Are there still territories in the world that are claimed by more than one country?

There are six major disputed territories in the world: the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the Paracel Islands, Spratly Islands, Western Sahara, and Antarctica (about a dozen nations have laid claims to portions of it). In addition, there are innumerable other territorial disputes throughout the world, many of which had resulted in ongoing armed conflicts.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle。

Cannabis Laws

(map from Wikipedia)

Rai Rai Ken - Best Ramen in NYC !!

Address:
214 E. 10th St., New York, NY 10003
between First and Second Aves. (East Village, St. Mark's Place area)
Tel: 212-477-7030
Open hour:
Mon~Sat: Noon - 2:30 am.
Sunday: Noon - 11:30 pm.

I always though Japanese Ramen is just a bowl of well cooked instant noodle, never really understand some people's obsession about it. As half northern Chinese, half southern Chinese, grew up in Taipei, and spent half of my life in Paris... Chinese's ramen or simply Taiwanese beef noodle are the best of the best in the noodle world.

I've a celebrity friend who's obsessing by the Japanese Ramen, and wherever we meet, Paris or New York, she always like to have Ramen many days in the row. We'll try out all the Ramen places possible, to find a best Ramen soup spot. But couple years later, I still can't understand why she likes Ramen so much, they're still just a bowl of well cooked instant noodle for me. And still can't understand why the movie Tempopo makes such a big deal of Ramen with some almost magical Chinese soup base.

One day I found a New York Japanese website, where many people posted reviews for the Japanese restaurant in NYC. Many restaurants mentioned, but only the name "Rai Rai Ken" 來來軒 appears repeatedly in many reviews. "traditional taste Ramen and the best soup base etc." But there was one comment lighted up my appetite. "The movie Tempopo's style..." Oh man. We got to eat that Ramen right now!!

It was Friday night, we got there just a bit after 10 pm. The very small restaurant was almost empty. And I can't help to wonder the accuracy of the reviews. Then, Kim-Chee was tasty but too spicy, Gyoza comparing with Paris Sapporo and our home made special recipe, it was almost unbearable. But the Curry Ramen and the Fried Rice were the best we ever had. It's not just the delicious soup base, the noodle itself is with character, they never lost the chew by the soup. And for the first time. Ramen is on my tasty food list. Later, by the time we enjoying our meal, the only content 14 persons' mini restaurant is already full with a small line at door.

The appetizers are from $2.30 to $4.60, and the main dishes are from $5.55 to $8.30. They only have 4 different ramen dishes, and I can't wait to try them all.
Other notice: The restaurant encourage clients to drink their very tasty filtered water, and all food are nature without any MSG added.

If you''re in New York, don't forget to have a Miso or Curry Ramen soup and fried rice at Rai Rai Ken.
Bon Appetit !

Linus Blanket

Still remember your first blanket? Or still looking for the one to hook on?
I used to have 2 small blankets, one in baby pink and one in baby blue. Since I'm the 2nd child of the family, when is my turn to own those two blankets, they're already not new. But I was so into those blankets, that the 3rd child of the family had no chance to have them. They were my parents' wedding gift, which came with a big brown color one. The quality was the best, hand made with the topest technic of a best bedding company from Shanghai. They used the best wool and the best Chinese silk for the border. They were extremely attaching for the touch, and they were my main interest in life until I turned 10.

What happened? We moved, and my mom decided to throw them into the trash. I was shocked and terrified when I realized I will never able to sleep a night feeling secure again. Well. My parents were still using the big one, which I was always sneaking in their room by any excuse, just to be able to touch the big blanket and the silky border. When I was 16. I got a serious car crash and had to stay in the hospital for a month. And while I was in pain with drug, I asked my mom to bring the big blanket to the hospital, that I can touch the silky border 24H/24H. ^_^' What a joy of life !!

Many years later. I grew up, fell in love, moved to Paris, fell in love... but there is always a hole in my heart that I can't explain. Finally once when I returned to Taipei. I found myself again sneaked into my parent's room touching the silky border a lot. Then the day before my depart back to study... I asked the permission to bring the blanket with me to Paris. And ever since, I'm with that blanket. I specially bought a window door laundry machine to let me able to watch the blanket while washing, and I carry that blanket whenever I travel away for more than a month. That's the longest I can bear a life without it.

Again many years later. I realized this 40 years old blanket is facing it's end. It lost the thickness and the silky border is also about to disappear completely. Which I guess it's time for me to find a replacement, and maybe put this old blanket in a much safer place. And for many years, I've been looking for the replacement with the same touch but in vain.
Well. At least I found "Linus Blanket". Linus, the the little boy with a blue blanket in the Snoopy.
mmm... The quality is absolutely not comparable, but it's extremely soft to touch. Unfortunately, the border of this $34 blanket is nothing silky for the touch, which I bought $46 's satin ribbon to redo the border myself.
Voila! The story of my life.

The "Linus Blanket" is from Urban Outfitters store. They're already sold out from the online store, and won't have them in the stock till 2010. If you're like me a blanket hooker or planing to hook a baby with a blanket. You can always purchase it from their stores. And guess what? When you purchase a "Linus Blanket", you also donated $5 to "Project Linus" and become a blanketeer. : )

The Painted Veil

I was pretty close to work on this film, but it ended up against my just left Paris and moved into NYC timing.

Friend of mine a big romantic got this project for his new position in China, and advised me to get a copy of The Painted Veil by early 20th century English novelist W. Somerset Maugham. I read the book while I was in Paris packing alone and was very emotional in reading it. The writing was not perfect but was sure very fashionable at time. The story is not grand but the typical English timeless love is sorrow enough to keep a box of tissue handy.

The book has already been adapted once in 1934, but it was alter from the original story. Which make me very curious about this more faithful version. And even I love Edward Norton and think Naomi Watts is great cast, but since I was picturing Clive Owen as the lover, so it's very ambiguous for me now to get used to Liev Schreiber (he's excellent in Mixed Nuts).

Anyway. The film release date is Dec. 20 2006. And before you get to read the book. Here is the trailer:

Infernal Affairs vs. The Departed

Martin Scorsese is not a quality guarantee director, but he did marked the movie history with style such as Mean Streets(1973), Taxi Driver(1976), Raging Bull(1980) and The Aviator(2004) was a very remarkable film too with DiCaprio's great performance. From Robert De Niro to Leonardo DiCaprio, and for once he wants to union his lucky charms in the same film ... then Robert turned down the role and the unique and epic Jack Nicholson signed in with condition - More Jack in the story. He co-rewroted part of the script and put sex and drug in the film to make it more Hollywood like. Unfortunately. That might be the only big mistake they made, not to mention the shocking fake male genital on the huge wide screen. Which I think it's extremely uncomfortable for the female audiences, since almost all women and girls has pervert experiences of this kind in their unwanted memories.

Also one of the success reason of The Infernal Affairs was because the film was a real manly man story with slight touch of three wonderful actresses. Contrarily to The Departed, smart or not to concentrate the female roles in one and common shrink. And contrarily to Tony Leung, Andy Lau and Eric Tsen's excellent acting is the drama DiCaprio, the always Matt Damon's Matt Damon, and always Jack Nicholson's Jack. Anthony Wong was remarkable, Martin Sheen was o.k. plus some little fun touches with Alec Baldwin as captain and Mark Wahlberg's fast mouth. Which maybe saved the film from the total failure.

The Infernal Affairs has 1/3 of the budget (6,428,966 USD) gone for the talents which is big in HK, and I guess The Departed (90,000,000 USD) has only 1/3 of the budget left for the film with $20M for DiCaprio, $10M each for Damon, Nicholson, Wahlberg, $6M for Scorsese and that's already $56M of the $90M. (don't worry. They've already made 130M in US only since the opening, which Brad Pitt's production Plan B. and the distributor WB got what they need for the next decadent movie maybe The Infernal Affairs II & III remake? or Joli's next adoption.) The art direction in The Departed was poor, the lighting was dry and the picture was disturbing. Also they filmed partly in Boston where the story base and partly in NYC for the 15% tax credit. And maybe that was why the film missed the perspective landscape compare with HK's modern hi-rise buildings, tropical sky and harbor, clean office, fashionable bar and crowdy HK streets contrast, and of course the great photography by Christopher Doyle.

The score is below: Infernal Affairs(2002) - The Departed(2006)

Budget: 6,428,966 USD < 90,000,000 USD
Length: 101 mn. < 150 mn.
Director: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak > Martin Scorsese
Writer: Felix Chong, Alan Mak > Jack Nicholson's re-write
Undercover bad guy: Andy Lau > Matt Damon
Undercover police: Tony Leung > Leonardo DiCaprio
Special unit chef: Anthony Wong > Martin Sheen
Special unit sidekick: xxx < Mark Wahlberg
Captain: xxx < Alec Baldwin
Female role: 3 actresses > 1 shrink
Chief's death: Infernal Affairs > The Departed
Vilain's capture: Infernal Affair < The Departed

so it's 7 > 5 for Infernal Affairs !!

Freedom of Speech

It's official. And it's shame that The Ark forced to cancel the US tour due to the anti-freedom of speech's threat.
After 9.11 the country lost the principle and confidence that everyone proud of. And now the threat is not only against the band, it's against all the Swedish brands and products, against Sweden. Even the threat is extremely minor, but it's extremely sad to see it exists in this country unfortunately.
Last week. A news said BBC is anti-America, and after US sold all the unwanted cigarettes, genetic mortified corn and beans to Taiwan, and forbidden importation excellent quality rice and Bananas from Taiwan, now even threat Taiwan's safety if not purchase the weapons from US. The unfriendly attitude toward to French since the war in Iraq and Lebanon is still growing, but the Statue of Liberty is still standing there to remind us how important the freedom is for everyone on earth. How ironic?
I can't help to wondering how many countries US government is going to against? And how far this hatred will go?

The Ark

I may be gay. But I can tell you straight away One Of Us Is Gonna Die Young It takes a Fool to Remain Sane,和2002年的 Tell Me This Night Is Over。

The Ark

The Ark 22 Oct. 2006 DC concert

Yes. They're back on tour in US with black and gold fancy new look. And ahead of new album release date, the show is amazingly refreshing by many songs yet been performed on stage with even more confidence and glam. Regardless of my show business background and 16 years in Paris. I learned to party like French, that means explosively enjoy the moment as much as possible at the moment only, and always back to self when moment end. That The Ark's show always give me the satisfaction in this philosophy, which I can scream like I'm acting in a Godzilla movie and fade worries into the party only scream. Suggest you to do the same. It's better than therapy.

Please find more pictures from The Ark 22 Oct. 2006 DC concert at my flicker album. And I'll back soon for more happening.

Here is the ending video with Sylvester's high jump drum beat:

Anti-Hero's Showtime - Dexter

I always though to smoke weeds in US is a crime unless you prove you need it to ease your pain and purchase legally in a pharmacy with a doctor prescription. And this fall, Showtime's popular family show Weeds is on its 2nd season and it's more popular than ever. Now Showtime pushes the anti-hero's button even farther then we can expect. Dexter, a day time blood stains forensic expert also a night time justice serial killer. The actor Six Feet Under gay brother, Michael C. Hall, the wonderful stunning performance that you once believed he was gay and now a psycho serial killer.

Since 3 episodes so far I was stunned by Dexter's world and the new experiment that Showtime makes all audiences swallow. Yes. You can freely choice not to participate this experiment or manipulation like refuse to watch any stupid reality shows. But it's hard to not to prove a slight pleasure when you see Michael C. Hall's Dexter's clever mind and self struggle without agreed with his philosophy. The show likes Psych on USA NetWork has flashback of character's youth to explain how Shawn Spencer grow to be a very good detective, here we see how Dexter Morgan became such a character with his very convincing evil double life. From Six Feet Under, Soprano, The Shield, Weeds and now Dexter, they personalized the so called weirdo and bad people which I guess they're trying to color the good and evil, happy ending cliche that US movies and TV brain washed the world since the past century.

Fortunately. Dexter didn't kill anyone in the 3rd episode, and it didn't gave up the know how to prepare a bloodless cut corp and packed them like meat from the market either. And even Dexter's god playing is hard to reproduce in real life, or find the similarity struggles in each one of us. But it's still hard to enjoy the show after the almost monthly school shooting and non stop street violence due to the gun control problem. We can maybe spend 90 minutes in a theater watching an action movie and call it a cool film and despite the free violence from some irresponsible filmmakers, or love and hate A Clockwork Orange and trying not to watch it again or skip the violent scene. But like some young men in the 1971, copied Alex's one eye makeup, cool style and even his violent acts. From the moment when Dexter found the Barbie message in his frizzer, the point we change side from witness Dexter's secret to feel exciting about the challenge when we see Dexter's reflection in the tiny pink mirror. That I'm sure the weekly show Dexter will affect more people into their life struggle and still naively hoping it won't inspire some might rules for real a double life to play god in the name of the justice.

I'd spent quite some time there in Miami scouting and making action movie which I'm familiar with Dexter's background landscape while watching him walks around at South Beach. The show recalled my everyday life in my past memory which I'm happy about it, and yes. I found pleasure in watching the show and I'll keep watching it or I might also write some sick scripts one day. The fact that show is a success since it aired just like the Weeds. Is because we believe the show has deeper message in it and the Showtime is a very courage and ambitious channel that we all happy its existence? Or is simply because the show digs right into the dark secret deep, deep inside of us?

Does the average audience able to make difference from the show to the real life? Is there an explanation for the execution of those peaceful Amish little girls? Or why the Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle we just saw he cleaning locker room few days ago, killed in a sudden death from plane crashed into a high rise building in Manhattan on 10.11 and make New Yorkers relive the 9.11 nightmare? Maybe we should all move to Des Moines in Iowa, where is supposedly "three years behind" everywhere else?

Nursing Home or Cruise Ship?

A fact story.

About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess Cruise Ship. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady.

I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the liner, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back-to-back.

As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises". She replied, "Yes, that's true."

I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied, without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home".

So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations on a Princess and I can get a long term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for:

1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day.

2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast-in-bed every day of the week).

3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.

4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.

5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days.

7. T. V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience.

8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.

9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if
you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite
for the rest of your life.

Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go.

So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship!

Maximilian Hecker - Bunny video

Just realized that the album's release date 22nd September is nothing to do with where I'm now and don't think either I will wait till US release date with imported price. Since I'm relying on the "I want it now and I'll get it now" attitude we called the internet and iTune virtual world. To purchase a hard copy of a media product yet available on iTune(available now) is really rare moment in my life. But... did I ever said that German is a difficult language to learn even you constantly watching Arte? Since my 7 languages portable translator (my husband) is not around. After the Hitchhiker's Babel Fish's help, I got the Amazon.de abschicken(german) = abs+chicken = send(english) me a purchase confirmation email. What a relive.

While waiting for the Virgin Mountain album ship to Paris before I head back to NY. Here you can link to the Bunny video:
Quick Time; Windows Media

I found the video interesting and should watch it at least twice to be able to appreciate the song cause the silly 70's running man just remind me the crazy Asian girl in Devo's "Whip it" video (scariest video in the entire human history), which I guess I'll need to turn on the Arte's sheep image to erase it before I able to go to sleep. So do watch the video with caution. Song is lovely and a bit funky for a surprise. Ride on.

This is for Steve Jobs and iTune engineers: I'm still waiting for the Prison Break episode 5!!

Steve Jobs' new toys

How can you not love the world of this man?!!
Every time the new Apple products released, I tell myself to be patient and wait to buy the 2nd generation, but very often I ended up to purchase them anyway. Actually I have my own idealized Apple products, and I can tell you that Steve Jobs is making them a little closer year by year. And hopefully I can live long enough to see all my imaginary products come true. Right forgot Jobs is much older than me.
Regardless the better and cheaper new iPod which plays movies and games, there is new nano took the appearance of the old mini, and the exciting tiny silver shuffle with clip. I guess all I whish for now is an flip iPod with bigger screen and combined with internet and phone with bluetooth ear-pod.
Of course the new iTune 7 has transformed from a simple music media player into a great toy of a real online media store, digital jukebox and free download albumart. But before a safer and more complete market really exist, we can only purchase the common media in the country where your account registred, which I found very inconvenience.
Yeah. Did I mention the iTV? Mr. Jobs is going to release a new wireless media box connect your flat TV screen to your computer and online iTune store. You can sit on your sofa with a remote to view every media from your computer and purchase from internet. And greatest thing is that the iTV box will realse in early 2007 with an afordable price of 299 USD (tax not included).
And I can't wait the system to replace all hard copy of CD and DVD, that we can finally get more free space and less packaging waste in our living environment. And maybe, we all going to consume all media via virtual system that no more illegal copies ruin our author right.
OK. Some people here might aware of future jobless situation if you earn your living with any products might disappear in the next few years. Now it's time for you to learn new tricks and find a new job.
Also if you haven't make out your mind for the Christmas present. Here is the link to see Steve Jobs' latest announcement video (if you have 30 minutes):
It's Showtime

The Jacket

Just watched The Jacket again. I still find Tom Bleecker's story and John Maybury 's directing are fascinating. Don't know why the writer is not writing more story of this kind, and don't know why the director has to wait 3 long years to make another film. But one thing for sure is that this film is one of the most successful independent movies from Warner Brothers. Brian Eno's composed music was every corner of the film when your heart most needed. Andy Tubman's "Quiet inside" and David Arnold & Iggy Pop's version of "We Have All the Time In the World" (Louis Armstrong) was really well selected for the ending credit. And again, the independent movie's soundtrack is nowhere to find.
Sure you can't miss Adrien Brody's heart breaking performance as always. It's hard to find the better cast to play someone in such misery but him. Wondering when he finally get opportunity to gain some weight. I also really like Jennifer Jason Leigh in here, cause beside her great acting, she's rare actress "heathly" dealing with her aging reality. We see also the next not very charming Bond Daniel Craig plays a drug addict pretend or not pretend to be a psychy loser. That I can't say I'm looking forward to see his "Bond 22" (2008) but sure I'll like to see him in "I, Lucifer" soon.
Brief. I always find the dead but not really, time travel kind story very interesting. And to have more movies like so, we should also support more independent filmmakers.

Chien-Ming Wang Rules!!

After New York Times article. August 13, 2006
More about him Yankees Player info

Can't tell you how much I've missed baseball after 16 years in Europe.

Now moved to NYC since a year, and happily found a Taiwanese pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, made his debut and carrying more than just well in the major league. What a gift for my new life and I can't thank him enough for it. Not just me. My Swedish husband also learned to engage into my baseball homesick. He enjoys the games, wins and losts with me and with the rest of Taiwanese, just like sometimes I cheer for the Swedish huckey or football teams.

We go to Yankees stadium in navy blue Wang's number 40 t-shirts, we watch it at home or on the computer when we travel back to Europe. Today. Wang will pitches another game and we all cross our figers for him. Not just us. He's in all Taiwaneses' hearts. Wang's hard work makes us forget our worries in life and our politic faillures. At least when he pitches. And at least now, we have someone we're proud of that Chinese government can't deny where he came from.

26-year-old Wang has a pair of strong shoulders for all Taiwanese's long lost hopes and dreams. And maybe for the New Yorkers as well under his cool charm. His hard works and all given chances by everyone in his life journey. All that makes him a phenomena by itself. That we cheer for him, for NY Yankees, for New York a place where dreams can come true.
